Protection against Extreme Temperatures
PM fibers with a polyimide coating are particularly suitable for use in medicine (where they are sterilized at high temperatures) and in sensor technology (e.g., in the curing of high-performance coating materials). The particularly close connection between the glass core and cladding offers crucial advantages in fiber-optic sensor systems when transmitting under mechanical stress.
Polyimides are high-performance polymers primarily used in electronics. The extremely robust and low-reaction material is chemically bonded to the surface of the fiber. Even a layer only 10 µm thick offers efficient protection against extreme external influences. A conventional acrylate coating would have to be at least four times as thick. Thanks to this thin protective layer, fibers with polyimide protection save space and are particularly suitable for smart skins and similar applications.
