Laser Research
For the Future

In the large laboratories of the world, powerful lasers are used not only for basic research but also to solve specific questions in medicine or materials processing.

Associated with these endeavors are prominent names such as the Center for Advanced Laser Applications (CALA) in Munich or the Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI) facilities in Hungary, Romania, and the Czech Republic - but comparable facilities also exist in France and the United States. The lasers used in all of these facilities are inevitably associated with high performance; the superlatives range from petawatts to megajoules.

Specialized components are required to guide the laser beams. LASER COMPONENTS has successfully developed components for several of these projects that meet the enormous requirements. Of course, we also support our customers with questions concerning laboratory equipment.

RESEARCH TODAY, AND SOON
TO BE EVERYDAY LIFE?

To detect cancer cells even earlier, scientists on the CALA team are exploring new avenues in medical imaging. For this purpose, they are using ATLAS-3000, one of the most powerful lasers in the world: Its ultrashort pulses generate extremely high-energy X-ray light, which is comparable to the intensity of synchrotron radiation.

Until it is bundled into a small dot, the laser beam passes through a maze of hundreds of laser optics, including mirrors from LASER COMPONENTS.

Optics for Lasers of the Future

High Power Lasers Require State-of-the-Art Coating Methods

When the first lasers were developed, the power limits reached into the milliwatt range. Today, the optics industry uses continuous wave lasers that emit several kilowatts; in addition, research centers use enormous pulsed laser devices that emit several hundred terawatts.

Contrary to the general trend toward miniaturization, laser optics are getting larger and larger at increasing output power levels. For optics manufacturers such as LASER COMPONENTS, there is great potential in precision optics with high damage thresholds.
