It was my great honor and pleasure to recently meet Dr. Townes and listen to his lecture entitled "The Fun of a Physics Career". His presentation was at the prestigious MIT Harrison Spectroscopy Laboratory as the First Annual Dasari Lecture. Townes requires no introduction as he conceived the idea of the "maser" in 1954, then with Schawlow in 1958, extended the concept to the optical and infrared spectral range which ultimately let to the development of the "optical maser" or laser.
Of all the interesting, fascinating and humorous topics Townes presented in his lecture, the most stimulating I found was his point that we must at all times have open minds, examine all scientific & engineering disciplines, including political, religious and emotional doctrines, talk with others and share information. By assimilating all these building blocks, this is how our technologies and lives will advance into the future. The unexpected often results as it did and does with the laser.
How wonderful our business model and products here at LASER COMPONENTS amplify this perspective. Our products lines, are diverse and touch a large variety of industries, scientific disciplines and people. We help provide the building blocks that are advancing our future. Where and what will that be?
