Once you have prepped the fibre with a fibre stripper, you are ready to use the cleaving knife from LASER COMPONENTS. In the practical shape of a ballpoint pen with a retractable diamond blade, this cleaving knife is efficient and easy to use.
The cleaving of optical fibres occurs by lightly scratching the fibre’s surface, i.e. the core in fibres with plastic cladding, or the cladding in quartz/quartz fibres. By pulling the fibre, stress is placed on the scratched area along the axis of the fibre – and the fibre breaks. The quality of a cleaved fibre face is adequate for many applications.
