For many of us, the summer period is associated with sporting activities. And when it comes to sporting events, the last few months have been particularly rich: from football in June, to the annual French cycling tour in July, to the big gathering of athletes in South America in August, we've had it all!
This is an opportunity for LASER COMPONENTS to examine the many interactions between sport and technology, and more specifically the contribution of photonics to the world of sport.
In the following pages, we will discuss examples as varied as the contribution of optoelectronics to the diagnosis of sports performance, the measurement of air quality in stadiums, laser telemetry and pole vaulting, or how to optimize the settings of one's bicycle using lasers...

IR detectors analyze not only breath gas
We are all familiar with gas measurements in industry and research; for example, pipelines are scanned to detect leaks, carbon monoxide emissions are measured in industrial environments, and the level of carbonic acid is monitored when filling mineral water bottles. However, we are interested in the use of gas analysis in sports in this issue.
