Hollow-Core Fibers for Erbium:YAG Lasers
Erbium:YAG lasers are frequently used in medicine, for example, in the controlled removal of tissue. Since absorption is too high at a wavelength of 2940 nm, hollow-core fibers are used. The inside of the capillary is coated with silver and silver iodide to create an efficient dielectric reflector.
Without external cooling, the fiber can be used at power levels of up to 60 W. With additional cooling devices, considerably higher power levels can be achieved.
