Ultra-Thin Filters

Ultra-thin optical filters not only save space. Their flexible material adds to their versatility and helps solve the problem of blue shift.

Bendable Materials for New Opportunities

Using a newly developed process, it is now possible to manufacture ultra-thin plastic filters with a thickness of 500 µm or less. The material put into any form, which brings many advantages, such as the ability to correct the blue shift caused by optical interference filters at increasing angles of incidence (AOI). By providing a domed surface, the ultrathin filters ensure that the light almost always strikes at right angles, regardless of AOI. Sensor designers can thus reduce the bandwidth of the bandpass filters and optimize their signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) without limiting the field of view.

Ultra-thin filters can be used for the following designs:

  • Thin film single and multi-core filters with typically 5-8% FWHM of CWL and OD 6+ blocking.
  • Thin-film long-pass/short-pass filters with blocking up to OD 4
  • Thin film bandpass filters with FWHM: 5 - 100 nm and blocking up to OD 4
