Fibers in Optical Fiber Cables
Optical fiber cables are used in optical data transmission. Step-index fibers with a numerical aperture of 0.37 are used as standard fiber materials. The core diameters available include 200 µm, 300 µm, 400 µm, and 600 µm. The coupling efficiency of these fibers is particularly high; they allow the application of inexpensive emitter and receiver components.
Cable Configurations
We have different cable configurations available with special properties depending on the application and environmental conditions. We can meet almost any requirement with our range of products.
Simplex Cables
Simplex cables are used for simple point-to-point connections. These cables are particularly suited for use in buildings; they are used, for example, in short cable ducts. The diameters of standard cables include 2.2 mm, 2.5 mm, and 3.0 mm.
Zipcord Cables
In zipcord cables, two simplex cables are connected by an elastic bridge. This is the inexpensive version of duplex cables. Due to their simple design, zipcord cables are easy to separate for assembly purposes. They are used in bidirectional and unidirectional duplex operation.
Duplex Cables
The workmanship of duplex cables is much more sophisticated than that of zipcord cables; therefore, they can handle more mechanical stress than zipcord cables. Duplex cables are suited for use in long cable ducts!
In duplex cables, two simplex cables (subunits) share a single buffer. For easier identification, each subunit has a different color.
Multiplex/Breakout Cables
If several fibers are required for point-to-point connection, multiplex or breakout cables are used – whether the application is an indoor application in long cable ducts or an outdoor application.
Simplex cables are used as subunits; therefore, assembly is easy, and the cables are compatible with all standard connector systems. Breakout cables are available with 2, 4, or 6 subunits. Depending on the number of subunits, the outer diameter of the cables lies between 5 and 10 mm.

Strain Relief
Most cables can be delivered both with and without aramid yarn for strain relief purposes. We recommend this form of strain relief for use with SMA and ST connectors. In combination with V-PIN connectors, strain relief should not be used.
