Instructions for Handling Optical Elements Coated with AR for 10.6 µm

Introduction

Beyond Borders

The high-quality IR anti-reflective coatings of type AR 10.6 contain extremely small quantities of the radioactive substance thorium.
The thorium layer is embedded between other thin layers and thus forms a "sealed radioactive source". This means that no radioactive material can escape from the coating when it is undamaged.
The outermost layer of the coating consists of a non-radioactive material that was chosen for its good mechanical properties in order to effectively protect the underlying layers.

Instructions for normal handling

Wear vinyl gloves

There is no danger from radioactive radiation during normal handling or when cleaning the optics. The thorium layer, see above, is potentially hazardous to health if it is inhaled or swallowed. Eating, drinking and smoking in the affected work areas is not recommended. After any skin contact with the coated components, the affected area should be thoroughly washed immediately. Care should be taken when touching or cleaning the optics. Vinyl gloves are perfectly adequate.

Notes on handling scratched AR 10.6 coatings

Also wear a protective mask

Handling scratched coatings generally harbours a very low risk. Nevertheless, it should be noted that scratches in the coating can release small amounts of thorium, which are hazardous to health if they are inhaled or swallowed.
When handling scratched optics, it is advisable to use a protective mask or respiratory filter to prevent inhalation or ingestion of thorium, despite the low level of radioactivity. In addition, hands should be washed thoroughly after coming into contact with a scratched coating. A full protective suit is not required. Any material such as used wipes, gloves and masks should be disposed of in a plastic bag, wrapped and sealed, after use.

Instructions for handling broken optical elements with AR 10.6 coating

Protect yourself from skin injuries

In addition to the dangers described in point 3, broken elements can cause skin injuries. In the event of a skin injury caused by a broken optic, the wound must first be medically treated and closed before clean-up work can begin.
The fragments themselves represent sealed radioactive sources. Only a small amount of thorium can be released by a broken lens. However, to prevent small fragments of lenses from becoming lodged in clothing, a paper body covering is recommended during clean-up operations, together with the respiratory filter and gloves.
As far as possible, you should also avoid stirring up dust when sweeping up the fragments.
The fragments, broom, shovel, respirator, gloves and paper cover should then be placed in a cardboard box, wrapped in a plastic bag and sealed for disposal.
The legal framework for disposal is regulated in the Radiation Protection Ordinance.
